Wakehurst’s 90 Tonne Oak Boardwalk Is Nearing Completion

The finished boardwalk will be more than 300 metres long

This is how a finished section of boardwalk will look

It’s been a challenging and exciting project over the past few months, but the 90 tonne oak boardwalk we are building for Wakehurst – a Kew Royal Botanical Gardens property – is currently nearing completion. We posted some initial photos of earlier work on the project, but below are the latest updates.

Building The Boardwalk Framework

To make the wetlands accessible, we had to first install posts and joists to support the oak boardwalk. This included traversing waterways and muddy terrain, as you can see in the pictures.

The boardwalk is sloped as well as curved

We used metal supports over large gaps

Every joist is well thought out to provide a safe platform

The boardwalk has narrow, wide, and viewing area sections

Laying The Decking

Each piece of oak decking has two bauxite strips offering anti-slip properties to ensure safety for visitors. We also built hand rails of varying heights along different parts of the boardwalk.

It has been a pleasure to see the boardwalk evolve in time

The Finished Boardwalk

The finished boardwalk will make the wetland accessible, offering the ability to explore the relaxing, natural environment of Wakehurst.
